Calstan Mechanical were instructed by ISS to carry out works at Barclays main UK Data Centre is in Gloucester. It operates 24/7 as their banking hub and is very secure. The existing lower deck pressurisation units were life expired and needed replacement. They were fundamental to the cooling of the whole of the computer systems within the data centre.
The exiting equipment was built in when the building was constructed.

The Scope

Replace the critical plant in a critical environment. The existing equipment was built into the building when it was constructed.
4nr N and S lower deck pressurisation water units were worn out. These fed the cooling system which was used to protect the data centre computers from overheating.
Break down each existing unit within the building was impossible.
New electrical connections

The Outcome

This was a highly sensitive building that could not be closed during works being carried out, meaning phasing of the removal and replacement was crucial. An issue was apparent when arriving on site, the original plant sat on steel skids. Plant had to be lifted from the first floor using industrial magnets sat in a bespoke A frame and attached to runners hung on steel beams then transferred to a stair climbing trolley to get from the first floor plant room to the ground then lifted again and removed outside where it could finally be dismantled and taken away.
This was the first project that Calstan had been awarded directly by ISS. The project ran smoothly to programme and was well managed with no interruptions to the cooling of the data centre.
