Challenges

  • Works coordinated around a busy operational station, with careful phasing to minimise disruption to passengers.
  • Conversion of a redundant building with limited plantroom space required bespoke flue design and careful integration of boilers, calorifiers, and pumps.
  • Close collaboration with Chiltern Railways, Network Rail, fire and safety specialists, and equipment suppliers to achieve approvals and maintain programme.
  • Gas, fire, mechanical and electrical systems required precise control integration and compliance with Network Rail standards.

The Brief

Working for Braybrook Building & Railway Contractors, Chiltern Railways required a full design and build upgrade at Banbury Station to provide additional accommodation and new welfare facilities for 27 drivers and colleagues.

The Scope

Calstan Mechanical led the Mechanical, Electrical and Public Health Services design and installation, transforming a redundant taxi rank building into a fully functional drivers’ and colleague’s hub with showers, changing facilities, WC blocks, offices and welfare areas.

The project scope included the installation of two 60 kW gas-fired condensing boilers with associated LTHW systems, plate heat exchanger, pumps, pressurisation units, expansion vessels, and full flue system. New ducted ventilation with energy recovery, VRF air conditioning, and extract fans will serve welfare, office, and communications areas. Sanitaryware works cover WCs, urinals, accessible Doc M packs, showers, wash troughs, sinks, and kitchenettes. Fire and life safety systems include a Hochiki ESP fire detection network fully interfaced with the station panel. Gas safety upgrades include solenoid valves, CO/methane detection, and emergency shut-off. Lightning protection, thermal insulation of plant and pipework, and full electrical works—comprising power distribution, small power and data, LED lighting, emergency and external lighting—are included.

The project was delivered in collaboration with our client Braybrook Building & Railway Contractors, working closely with their fantastic team to achieve a high-quality and coordinated outcome, while maintaining a professional approach throughout.

The Outcome

New drivers’ accommodation offers modern showers, changing, rest, and office facilities that enhance staff wellbeing and support a more diverse workforce, while high-quality sanitaryware, sensor-operated systems, and improved ventilation create a clean and efficient environment for both passengers and staff. Dual boiler systems, gas safety interlocks, upgraded fire detection, and lightning protection ensure operational resilience and full compliance, all delivered on schedule and within budget despite space and access challenges.
